US Flag Lap Desk

It was so fun to have a long weekend for the 4th of July holiday; I hope you had a great time celebrating with friends and family. Our neighborhood has a few different 4th of July block parties, which means lots of fireworks. Our vet gave us sedatives for our fur babies, two cats and a Bulldog. In an attempt to catch one of our cats, I earned a few battle scars. We learned that cats and sedatives do not mix. I wasn’t worried about the cats, because we have a great vet (Dr Gindi – Huntington Beach). But seeing the glazed over eyes, pulled back ears, and how jumping on the bed was a major feat, all while still startled each time a firework exploded. Nah, no more sedatives for them. Our English Bully, Winston, he’s another story, he slept and snored up a storm.

I made one of these lap desk a few weeks ago and shared it, the other lap desk has the British Union Jack flag. I have to admit, the Union Jack is WAY easier to make with with nothing but straight lines. The USA flag, much more difficlt because of those darn stars! I hesitated for a long time with those stars. I knew painting them free hand wasn’t an options, so I broke out my Silhouette Cameo (if you like crafty projects, I highly recommend getting one). The stars are little stretched, but overall I don’t think it turned out too bad for a first go.

My paint palette – yes, a small silver plate tray. Not to worry, the paint does come off.

I taped and painted the stripes first, then applied the stars and taped off the blue square (this step is done after your red paint is dry)

Lap Desk: US Flag. I avoided the stars until the last minute. Rather than free land, I used my Cameo Silhouette to cute a sheet out.

I like this picture; it looks like stained glass.

Removed all the tape, did some clean up on those stripes, and did a little distressing with the palm hand sander.

This lap desk will be listed in our Atomic Hostess etsy shop, right next to the Union Jack lap desk.

I’ll also be sharing with you the bunting flags I made over the last week. Yes, I’m late on this trend; it takes me a good push and motivation to actually break out my sewing machine. Bunting post coming to you soon in a couple days.

Have a great week. xxoo

Thanks Alexis! My husband would say that was my idea, but really he inspired it. I’ve been on a copper kick lately, and he had left over copper bell hangers and piping. He hunted all over to find a good deal on the bell hangers and finally found a big bag of them at Lowe’s (I think).
