Chippy Vintage Window Display Cabinet

i love the chippy finish of these vintage windows.

i love the chippy finish of these vintage windows. I’ll put a matte top coat to protect the chipping paint.

It’s a trap; I walked right into it. We were at Home Depot and we were trying to find cording for the Roman Shades I’m working on. Later that night, I was almost done with the first shade; and then Ugh! I stapled the d@mn thing to the header board upside down. Anyway earlier at Home Depot, apparently the guys that work at the store cringe every time someone mentions…..”well, I saw this thing on Pinterest”. Yep, I did it, I walked right into the trap by saying that exact thing. There were looks that flashed across their faces, trying very hard to go unnoticed, but I noticed.

Why am I telling this story. I’m not sure! Oh, that’s right, because I saw this really great display case for all of my vintage barware, and Cathrineholm collection on Pinterest. How do you NOT love that site? The case is made out of chippy old vintage windows.

We bought a couple windows from an Etsy shop, they ended up being a little smaller than we anticipated. Even though we measured it all out. Jerry solved the issue by stepping in the middle of one of the windows and breaking the glass. Problem solved. We were off to find a couple more “new” windows.

This time around, we found a somewhat local vintage shop that had 3 windows. The price was better, and no shipping expenses required.

Prototype v1 was in the process of being built for the smaller windows, now broken. Prototype v2 is scheduled to start soon, and we thought of a few great  improvements. Those windows, look at those gorgeous windows that we were able to pick up from Vintage Pieces From Heaven. I snapped a few pictures to share of her shop, very cute.

Hi I looked at the windows outside and because they are double windows (2 side by side) I thought the panes were much larger than they actually are. They are small. Because you and a couple of other people have commented about trying to find them let me share an insight as you can find them in most cities. Go to google and look up Architectural salvage or just salvage yards in your city and you should get a list of places around you. call them and ask if they sell old wooden window sashes. Builders throw them away all the time and these places pick them up. Also try Habitat for Humanity stores. They usually keep these outside in a trailer so you have to ask for them. I have never seen them for more that $10 a sash although $5 is the norm. I occasionally also see them on Craig’s list but when private sellers list them they usually go for $20 or more. I would never pay that. You should be able to find quite a lot in the spring as people will be sprucing up and throwing them out. You might want to do some drivebys in your local historic district. One mans junk is another mans treasure!! Us creative people live by that because we turn trash to treasures!!
