Over the summer we had our first Air B&B experience. We loved it.
I always enjoy my trips to hair salon to wash my grays away. My hair stylist and friend, Joni, has been fixing my hairs for 10+ years. Going to my appointments is more like happy hour. We laugh, joke, look through magazines, talk about the latest “how did I ever live without this” vintage find, and which flea market or community sale is coming up.
A few years ago Joni and her husband bought 3 cabins all right next to theirs at Green Valley Lake on Big Bear Mountain. After lots of rehab projects and updates, and hunting & shopping to decorate and furnish (mostly in vintage), the 1st of the three cabins went up on Air B&B as a vacation rental. Each cabin is a little different, and adorable. Jerry and I stayed in the one bedroom cabin with a full kitchen, bathroom and good size living room. The second cabin that went up for rent in July is a two bedroom cabin with lots of room, perfect for spending a family holiday in the mountains. The third cabin may be finished now; it is a little smaller with a sleeping loft.
Since Jerry and I both work from home, as long as there’s wireless, its just as easy to work from a temporary location. Joni had invited us up to stay, we picked a couple week days, packed up our Bulldog Winston, and headed up the mountain. Big Bear Mountain is just a quick 2 hour drive from the beach; it’s also a great way to get some Fall like weather too.
When we got home from the lake, I jumped on the AirB&B site to check out my favorite places to visit and the options. I also checked out some really interesting rentals; I’ve seen several that are Airstream trailers, while searching around recently I stumbled across a Air B&B that is a remodeled barn with horses just on the other side of the wall. The beach rentals seemed endless! There are so many rentals with similar circumstance to Joni’s cabins. Green Valley Lake, CA there are zero hotels or even motels in the immediate area. Staying in a hotel doesn’t situate you across the street from the lake. If the local rentals weren’t available, you wouldn’t get to experience the post office that’s open from 11am to 3 pm, or the only bar in town that’s only open during the weekend, and an old fashioned general store with a very helpful accommodating owner / store keep. I am looking forward to planning another trip and potentially staying at an Air B&B. it’s really the best way to experience a location and live like the locals.
